January 2013 Newsletter

Term Dates

7th January ———- 15th February

25th February ——- 28th March

15th April ———— 24th May

3rd June ————– 23rd July

Please note there is NO pre-school on May 6th. Could you make a note of these dates in your diary and also pass them on to other carers who have responsibility for bringing or collecting your child.

Happy New Year to You All from Jane & the Team at Ridings Pre-School & Lots of Thanks to those of you who brought cards and gifts for the staff who are now all on diets, but smell lovely from their shower gels and body lotions.

Over the next half term the children will be looking at features in the local environment and the seasonal weather. As you walk around the locality with your child you could talk with them about things that you pass or see on your journey, including the shops, pub, schools, park, post office, etc. etc. You could also name animals, trees and  birds as well as identifying names and numbers on houses.

The children’s Christmas party was a huge success with 45 children attending and enjoying being entertained by the wonderful and funny Clown called Carlo. This man is so skilled at keeping large groups of 2, 3 & 4 year olds entertained with his traditional magic and simple jokes!!!!!!  The children were also treated to a visit by Father Christmas who brought gifts for everyone before flying off with Rudolph and his friends to get ready for his big event on Christmas Eve.

Weather

snowmanAs we are now officially in winter we should be prepared for a change in weather and possibly some ice and snow. Please ensure that your child is dressed correctly for the weather of the day and that they have coats, hats etc. that are clearly labelled with their name. Wellington/snow boots can be left in the kitchen, pegged together with a named peg and indoor shoes should be brought to wear inside.

In the case of heavy snow we will always attempt to stay open as staff will walk in wherever possible. Should we need to close we will advertise this on Radio Derby and via our own website.

Website

Information returned in the recent questionnaire showed that the majority of parents still wish to receive a paper copy of the Newsletter, however we will place additional information on the website so please keep logging into this for additional News.

Thank You

A BIG Thank You to Nicholas Collumbell (parent) who gave up a day to replace a number of bricks in the pre-school wall, adjacent to the alleyway, that were damaged and in great need of work. This support is valued greatly by us all and is an essential part of the pre-school’s success.

Plea for Help

If we have anyone out there who has experience in working on chimneys/leaking roofs I would really like to have chat with them as the recent rain has caused serious water ingress into the pre-schools roof around both the chimney stacks, this lead to serious damp issues over the Christmas break with water running down the walls and huge damp patches across the ceilings.

Questionnaires

Many Thanks to those parents who completed and returned the questionnaire sent out last November. As a result of these we have decided to introduce Friday afternoon sessions form January. We will also be looking into the viability of planning some other additional services.

Your response towards our recently introduced outdoor activity sessions gave us a great boost and has inspired us to continue with these. We have also been offered use of a piece of land by Pauline Johnson that we will be starting to visit from March this year after we have carried out risk assessments and completed some staff training and gathered resources. We are really excited about this new activity and will take small groups up to the paddock initially once a month for a whole session.

If you would like to know more about this venture then please speak with Jane.

The children are also visiting the mobile library on alternate Monday afternoons where they can select books to bring and share with their peers.

New Links with Health Visitor Services

We are planning to hold a small number of drop-in sessions that will be supported by a Health Visitor and will focus on issues including toileting and use of dummies. Fliers for these sessions will be sent out nearer the date and will only take place if you as parents support them and use them to find out information on helping your child with any concerns you may have.
