Newsletter Summer Term 2015 no. 1

Pre-School will be closed on May 4th as this is a Bank Holiday

Topic for this Term Over the next few weeks we shall be looking at Fairy Stories and the characters displayed within them especially goodies & baddies, heroes and heroines and making up our own stories, dressing up and creating resources.

Water Play As you will see we have at long last had the work on the water play area done at a cost of around £800. The new flooring, wall cladding and boxed pipe work were all completed by AJ Floorcraft of Derby. I am really pleased to see that our continued perusal of revamping this area has at last come to fruition and look forward to having a safer and more inviting area for water play activities.

Lunch Club During this term we shall be supporting the majority of July school leavers to manage their own lunch boxes. Could you therefore consider how you package your child’s lunch and avoid plastic bags & cling film as well as containers that are complex for them to open. Can I also remind all parents to not send sweeties, chocolates or fizzy drinks.

Being Safe in the Sun We have now registered with the Radio Derby initiative that encourages sun safety for young children in pre-schools and nurseries. Along with this newsletter we have sent you a letter from Sunsafe and a slip for you to sign and return agreeing to support this programme. Each year we remind parents of the need to provide a sun hat and dress children appropriately for the weather as children without hats cannot play outside in sunny weather. If you provide sun cream for us to administer you will need to complete the medical paperwork to give permission for this.

Toilet Bags Can you please check whether you need to bring a changing bag to pre-school for your child as this area is becoming overloaded with bags for children who are secure in their toileting. All changing bags must be clearly labelled on the outside with your child’s name.

Parents Consultation Evening This will take place at pre-school on April 28th between 6 & 7-30pm. Appointment schedules will be on display in the kitchen from 20th April for you to book a time to meet with your child’s key person and come and share your child’s progress and find out about their next steps for development.

Spring Fair  May 17th. Please look out for more information that will be sent home through your child’s drawer

Annual Clean at Pre-School June 14th is the date you need to put in your diary for coming to help us as we give the setting a spruce up to make it fresh for the children. Further information will be sent out nearer to this date.

Leavers Photo/Concert We have booked Tempest photographers to come and take pictures that will be made into a vista of all the children who are leaving that you will be able to purchase as a keepsake of their time at Ridings Pre-School. The photos will be taken on June 10th between 11am and 12noon. If your child does not come to pre-school on this day they will be able to come along to take part in the photo shoot, just have a word with Jane to arrange this.

This years’ Leavers Concert will be on 16th July. Please put this date in your diary if your child will be leaving pre-school to move onto school in September. All children and their parents and grandparents will be welcome to attend and join this celebration at 2.45pm.

Bag2school– We will be sending out blue bags in the near future for you to fill with unwanted clothes that can then make money for the pre-school. If you are having a clear out of outgrown or unwanted items please save them for us.

Pupil Premium paperwork due back by the end of this week.

Please let Jane know in writing the sessions you would like for September and the next pre-school year.


Tony Fitzhugh for donating new logs for our stumpery. The children will love searching for the bugs and worms that will move in there.

Becky & Carole Hanser for their £10 donation towards resources for the garden area.

To All the Families who took part in the Treasure Hunt which raised £480.50 for pre-school resources. We had 23 of the 48 families who come to pre-school take part in this event. I know the children who have talked to us about where they went and what they collected certainly enjoyed their time out with family exploring the local environment. I am sure that Elvaston Castle must be lacking pine cones this year!!!!!

Everyone who supported the Mothers Day Shop. This was a lovely experience as the children took their money and made their own choices from the display in the Garden Room Shop. We raised £95 and we are looking to spend this on some new wooden planters in the garden area. It was interesting to talk with the children about the reasons for the choices they made which included present size, colourful wrappings as well as ribbons & bows used to decorate packages.
